Mopin

The White Carnival of Arunachal – A Celebration of Purity and Playfulness

Mopin is observed to ward off natural calamities, diseases, and negative influences, while invoking blessings for a rich harvest, good health, wealth, peace, and prosperity. During the celebration, the community worships Mopin Ane, the benevolent goddess of welfare, wisdom, and abundance. It is a festival that blends faith, unity, and tradition in the most heartfelt manner.

The festival typically begins in the first week of April, just before the paddy plantation season, and continues for five joyful days. One of its most distinctive traditions is the smearing of rice paste (Iti) on one another’s faces, symbolizing purity, happiness, and communal harmony.

Throughout the five days, the air is filled with music, laughter, and dance. Groups of boys, girls, men, and women move from house to house performing traditional dances, while a grand collective celebration takes place in a common community ground. At the break of day, young men and women dressed in magnificent traditional attire and adorned with heavy bead and metal ornaments gather to begin the festivities. The fields glow with colours, smiles, and rhythmic chants.

What makes Mopin even more special is its warmth and inclusiveness. Visitors, guests, and non-tribal participants are welcomed with open arms, becoming a part of the celebration, sharing joy, and experiencing the hospitality and cultural richness of the Galo community.

A festival of faith, unity, and merriment—Mopin is not just an event, but an unforgettable cultural embrace.
